Wooden hull made out of ceibo's.
The manufacturing process of the legüero drum, begins with the selection of Ceibo's tree which is where you will get the hull of the drum. The selection of the tree is important because this will determine the quality of sound, color, and life of the instrument.
Once you cut the trunk of the tree which will determines the size of each
hull, the next step is the carving of the same, to obtain a rounded shape, and we
will proceed to the cleaning, from the bark of the trunk.
The next step is the carving of the wooden cylinder that is made with a chainsaw, and refines the carv with a chisel (sharp spatula-like tool). Then comes the drying of the hull already carved, through the oven or with charcoal
This process usually lasts 3-5 days
At this stage we reduce the cylinder thickness with a planer, then with the grinder it reduces up to the smoothness of the cylinder surface , which gives the sanding all over the surface of the hull evenly
Rings of white iron wood
Rods are cut of white iron wood about 1cm thick, these are left to soak for 1 day until they become flexible. Then it is placed on the wooden hull and gets nailed in the end.
Patches of goat / sheep
we make drawing up the ties with the extent of the mouth of the hull.
The hides are soaked for 4 to 5 hours to take flexibility, it is appropriate the
positioning of the loop on the leather to make the cut and cooked.
Then he cuts the hair of the animal to achieve a uniform surface.
The soles are of cow leather , and is used for the making of the soles, tensioners
and other small parts of the drum
Percussion sticks
The sticks are made of wood Ancoche. They are 37 cm. long by 1 ½ cm. wide approximately.A stick (the couple) has at its end a ball filled with wool, to provoque a more serious bass sound on the drum.
